Coverage of immigration enforcement split sharply across the ideological spectrum, with a 5-point spread separating the most left- and right-coded outlets. The Los Angeles Times framed the story through a sympathetic lens, leading with the phrase "Too many cases" to voice Mexico's concerns over deaths of its citizens "in ICE custody" — language that centers migrant vulnerability and institutional accountability. At the far right, Breitbart and The Federalist employed maximally charged terminology: Breitbart paired "DACA Illegal Alien" with a child pornography charge to link immigration status directly to criminal conduct, while The Federalist described a state attorney general as working to "Protect Illegals," a phrase that both dehumanizes and implies wrongdoing in the protection itself. Fox News occupied a middle-right position, using "Illegal immigrant" alongside a skeptical description of a "mental health defense," signaling doubt about the defendant's claim. Across the right-leaning outlets, the consistent signal was using legal status as the defining label for individuals accused of crimes.
